For those who don't know, the EGR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation, system takes some of the exhaust gas and reintroduces it into the intake manifold. I should note that at idle and full throttle, the EGR valve is closed, and does not allow any exhaust into the intake.
The debate is whether or not removing the entire EGR system, and getting a tune to take it out of the ECU will allow for performance gains.
Some say there won't be any performance gains and will hurt MPGs, and some say it would result in performance gains. I would think there would be performance gains. Each cylinder can only has a certain amount of displacement. I will be using Ford's 4. Each cylinder has.

To keep up with times we have also figured out a better solution to deletes that works with all climates. Especially in the Canadian tundra. We turn off the sensors in the exhaust that will not survive the extreme temperatures changes while you keep the filters in and just manually wash them every half a year.

The car is smart enough to not recirculate exhaust gases into the engine when max power is requested as far as I know. I've heard that EGR actually increases CO2 emissions, but thats jsut what I've heard, I'd have to look in my school textbook to confirm for sure. I guess you could argue weight savings, too. Exhaust Gas Recirculation EGR essentially does all of the above, but at an earlier stage, by helping to reduce the amount of NOx which is produced inside the engine before it gets to the catalytic converter.
It does this by recirculating a portion of the exhaust emissions and running it through the combustion process again. EGR systems have been known to cause some potentially serious issues in an engine, including stuck valves, coolant problems, and leaky cylinders as a result of sooty carbon clogging up the intake system. Now, remember that the point of the original EGR technology design was to help to keep huge amounts of unburned fuel from being released into the atmosphere.

This is unlikely since the soot gets burned in the combustion chamber and diesel engine oil is also formulated to hold soot and combustion by-products.
Engine oil quality and engine maintenance is a much greater factor in proper lubrication than the presence of an EGR system. Another consideration before you think about modifying or deleting the EGR system: you will almost certainly have problems getting warranty coverage on the engine if the dealer notices its removal.
